In providing full-service interior design to clients, we’ve identified some guidelines that help make every project the best it can be.
Some of these have to do with color and style choices and similar decisions when it comes to outfitting an interior space. Take a look and think about your take on these design processes and choices.
The Color Phenomenon
One overarching principle is that colors should not be too busy or diverse, because it creates challenges for the eye. Some people understand this in an intuitive sense, but when you get into the psychological science of why this is, it becomes clearer sometimes.
Remember the old Internet, with the bright colors clashing on a clunky image and text page?
People thought of that stylistically as part of the “growing pains” of the Internet, and slick modern pages have a much more subtle and smooth style.
The same is true for interior design. In the 1970s, designers were much more likely to try putting bright, bold colors together. They didn’t mix them up in angry fruit salad, as was typically done online later, but they used things like bright rust colored tones, and bright red and green carpeting, to dress up interior spaces. They did this so much that you now associate some of these color schemes with that decade, and designers will point out how they seem “dated.” Some people still want this type of retro look, but many others are in the process of modernizing spaces from that era, to a new one that looks rather different.
Now, we’ve come to a much different point in interior design, where you’re more likely to see the kinds of colors you see on our portfolio – white or off-white with muted or earth-toned colors.
Spare Style
Modernism doesn’t mean that you strip down everything but the light bulb.
What it means is that you approach spatial design strategically, again, with some of the science that interior designers learn about, related to where the eye goes, for example, and how people feel in a space.
You can see this on display in our portfolio, too, as we feature the kinds of deliberate throw pillow placement designs and more that have a particular positive effect on visitors and inhabitants.
