Today I want to touch on honing your personal aesthetic.   On my personal journey, there have been many times that I have been swayed by trends, but I also realize that all of those things were actually steps taken to evolve into an aesthetic that I really love today. When moving through those phases, you find things that stick and you find things that ultimately aren’t for you.

For me personally, I always want my spaces to be comfortable without compromising any style.  I want my spaces to be a place for relaxing because that’s what home is for me.  That means neutral spaces that are low maintenance and function really well for my family.  For others, that may be different.  I have learned that having a mission for a space really helps me stay on track and align on a final design.

I have also learned that it is so important to look at and appreciate other aesthetics or design styles without feeling like you have to compromise your own.  I think when you don’t have a clear mission, it is so easy to compromise your own style.  It is so important to be able to appreciate others aesthetic without getting sidetracked from your own.

I really love Pinterest for inspiration but I think it’s important to note that the things that feel most intuitive and organic for you are probably not going to come from Pinterest, you really have to look inward. When I work with clients, I always try to get really clear on the feeling that they’re going for. We can use that as a guide, regularly checking in to make sure the choices that we are making are in line with that plan. If someone isn’t sure exactly what their style is, using the “feeling” to guide us can be helpful.

To hone your aesthetic, I recommend looking at the things that are already around you that you love.  For example your wardrobe or a piece of art that you love.  Even a wine bottle or things in nature that you’re drawn to. What is it about those things that drew you in and kept you engaged? Chase those things to begin to channel a home you love.  Don’t chase the trends.
